Position Title: Lead Software Engineer

External Description:

Worldwide Clinical Trials are hiring a Solutions Engineer Team Lead on a Full-time, Permanent basis. Based in Beeston, Nottingham.

The Solutions Engineer Team Lead will be a key technical role in the Clinical Systems group that will serve as a technical resource and mentor to other Solutions Engineers. This role will be crucial in the ongoing development of junior Solution Engineers as well as act as a technical lead within the Clinical systems group.

SUMMARY:                  

Provides line management for Clinical Systems Development personnel. Will help lead the development, implementation, and maintenance of systems used in the management and conduct of clinical trials to meet business and technical or study specifications by contributing at all stages of the software development life cycle. Performs and oversees general administrative tasks.

 RESPONSIBILITIES:

Tasks may include but are not limited to:

  • Provide line management responsibilities for staff members, including: job description preparation, interviewing and selection, professional development, performance appraisals and performance management
  • Manage the resourcing of team tasks, including: assigning team members to tasks, estimating effort, collaborating with the project manager, forecasting future needs, updating or supporting the update of resource plans and actuals, and working with management to open requisitions or make staff adjustments to align with long term resourcing needs
  • Identify, create, compile, disseminate, and improve performance metrics, including KPIs, related to development / review activities to identify actionable issues and opportunities for improvement
  • Ensure production systems are functioning to meet their service level agreements by analyzing and resolving issues encountered, including the implementation of bug fixes where required and in alignment with SOPs
  • Lead the implementation of software solutions to meet study requirements, including but not limited to data integration, monitoring and reporting using a variety of platforms, tools, and languages
  • Maintain an understanding of current software delivery tools, approaches, and best practices within the Clinical industry and in software development at large
  • Provide strategic and operational advice regarding software solutions, platforms, tools and languages
  • Author and maintain departmental guides for software development tool use and best practices
  • Recommend the use of new technologies, tools, and approaches that can improve the quality or efficiency of software delivery and maintenance
  • Lead proof of concept efforts for new technologies and tools when approved by department management
  • Support the Clinical Systems Project Manager and other job functions with the production and review of specifications, plans, reports, study materials and other documentation during the development and support of systems
  • Create and review User Requirements Specifications as appropriate
  • Prepare, review and approve study design and integration documentation
  • Perform coding and configuration to meet study timelines, fulfill business and technical requirements, and align with SOPs
  • Perform formal code reviews to meet study timelines
  • Perform informal unit testing to meet study timelines
  • Complete Traceability Matrices as required
  • Work closely with applicable Worldwide departments to define and coordinate integration processes between systems/vendors
  • Interact and effectively communicate with project teams on technical and non-technical terms to determine test and code/configure requirements and acceptance criteria
  • Write and execute scripts as required to meet study timelines
  • Support Test Analysts during formal testing and/or quality review
  • Perform QC checks of manual database edits and other tasks where required
  • Assist in the formulation and reporting of QC software metrics
  • Assist in the investigation and resolution of issues and/or incidents
  • Ensure that all activities are appropriately documented and stored in accordance with the relevant SOP and requirements of the client company
  • Work effectively with project managers, stakeholders, vendors, and project teams to meet department and corporate quality and performance goals
  • Fully cooperate with auditors or regulatory authority inspectors before, during and after projects as applicable
  • Provide support for users of in-house software.
  • Lead or participate in departmental and team quality and process improvement efforts to increase overall operational efficiency
  • Contribute to incident management
  • Assist with the development, delivery and assignment of departmental training
  • Contribute to or lead amendments of SOPs and other procedural documents
  • Create and maintain document templates and department training plans
  • Mentor peers and junior staff
  • Act as a subject matter expert with regards to the investigation and resolution of issues and/or incidents
  • Contribute to departmental bids and resource management plans
  • Periodically act as a backup to the Manager, Clinical Systems Development and Support
  • Perform other duties as assigned

REQUIREMENTS:

  • Educated to degree level in a relevant discipline or be able to demonstrate equivalent experience
  • Have a sound working knowledge of at least two of the following: Java and Java Server technologies; Bus integration technologies; UNIX including C, C++ ; relational databases; or the Microsoft toolset including .Net Framework 4.5, C#, Visual Studio
  • 2+ years’ experience in a combination of Contract Research Organization (CRO) experience, IRT study delivery, or clinical systems development desired
  • 5+ years’ experience in software development
  • 2+ years’ experience in a senior or leadership position
  • Strong understanding of the software development lifecycle
  • Strong understanding of the GxP regulatory environment and GAMP guidelines
  • Experience supporting or leading process improvement initiatives
  • Proficient in the use and management of SDLC tools and processes
  • Familiarity with clinical trials, patient safety, data integrity and associated regulations
