Position Title: Supervisor, Medical Group

External Description:

SUMMARY:  The Nurse Supervisor, Medical Group oversees the performance of study procedures by paramedics, floor monitors, technical shift leads, phlebotomists, and other technical staff, performs study procedures, and provides medical coverage as needed while subjects are in-house.  The Nurse Supervisor will have a large amount of direct and unsupervised contact with study participants, in addition to the Paramedic and Phlebotomy teams and technical services staff.  He/she will be responsible for communicating problems, questions, and/or clarifications to his/her Supervisor.

The Nurse Supervisor, Medical Group works under the direct supervision and guidance of the Senior Manager, Medical Group, and indirectly under the Medical Director and Associate Director, Clinical Conduct.  He/she will provide direct supervision to all paramedics, phlebotomists, technicians, and indirect supervision for technical and laboratory staff (in the absence of a Full-Time Supervisor). 

RESPONSIBILITIES:

Tasks may include but are not limited to:

  • Under the direction of the Senior Manager, Medical Group, and the Medical Director, oversees the hiring, performance, and activities of all paramedic, phlebotomy, and technician staff.
  • Verify and sign FT and PRN staff timesheets.
  • Could function as Worldwide’s medical coverage in case of an emergency for subjects visiting Worldwide.
  • Project staffing needs in advance to assure adequate staffing for all studies.
  • Ensures all required training is completed and thorough documentation is on file before any supervised employee performs any job-related duties.
  • Oversees all study procedures to ensure that they are performed on time, following both the study protocol and WCTEPS procedures.
  • Acts as the primary contact for subjects while in-house when the Coordinator is not available.
  • Ensures the appropriate documentation by medical group staff of all adverse events reported and observed per Worldwide staff per study protocol and regulatory requirements while subjects are in-house.
  • Contacts the Medical Director, Coordinator, and/or Principal Investigator as needed.
  • Maintains and adjusts the paramedic work schedule according to workload and study needs. The Supervisor, Medical Group assists the Senior Manager, Medical Group in preparing daily assignments for the medical group staff.
  • Supervises paramedic, floor monitors, technical shift leads, and phlebotomy staff (and technical services staff in the absence of FT supervisor where applicable) to ensure that the following procedures are completed on time per WCTEPS guidelines and study protocol requirements:
  • Vital signs
  • Phlebotomy
  • Serving of meals/snacks
  • Collection and processing of lab samples (blood, urine, and other body fluids)
  • Insertion of IV catheters
  • Vein ratings
  • Dispenses concomitant medications as needed and directed by the Principal Investigator
  • Telemetry monitoring
  • Assists the Senior Manager, Medical Group in completing performance appraisals for the Paramedic, Floor Monitor, and Phlebotomy teams to evaluate individual performance, and assists with corrective action steps (such as documented coaching, counseling) as needed.
  • Performs study-specific procedures and duties per protocol requirements,
  • Responsible for ensuring that supplies and equipment are available and stocked.
  • Assists in training PRN staff and new Full-Time staff
  • Performs administrative tasks as needed (copying, filing, filling in CRFS, etc.)
  • Ensures those study procedures are set-up for, run smoothly and procedure areas are kept clean and uncluttered
  • Ensures that procedures are completed, and the disposal of contaminated supplies are carried out according to OSHA requirements
  • Writes Medical Group Study Guides as directed by the Senior Manager. Medical Group.
  • Assists with set-up and break-down of procedure areas as needed
  • Responsible for requesting, scheduling, and attending any training required for this position, and ensuring that all paramedic staff members complete position-specific or protocol-specific training as required.
  • Responsible for working with the appropriate staff member to set up using a qualified service to pick up medical waste, set up regular pickups, assure documentation of disposals are complete and current.
  • Responsible for all other duties as assigned.

OTHER SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

  • Customer service skills and be able to perform duties at a fast pace without errors.
  • Good documentation and organizational skills and good attention to detail.
  • Willing to perform repetitive tasks.
  • Good medical judgment.
  • Able to draw blood competently, observed by the Senior Manager, Medical Group, or Training Department staff.
  • Knowledge and skills in performing technical and laboratory procedures; experience performing phlebotomy, vital signs, ECGs, telemetry monitoring, Holter monitoring, IVs, computer skills, and laboratory procedures.
  • Medical equipment as indicated by protocol or standing orders for the care of subjects and completion of study requirements. Office equipment used for communication and general office duties. Laboratory equipment is used for the processing of laboratory samples.  Food preparation equipment for the use of reheating meals.

REQUIREMENTS:

Required: At least 2 years experience supervising nurses, paramedics, or phlebotomists. Texas Department of Health Paramedic certification or a Licensed Vocational Nurse (LVN). At least 4 years of clinical research experience as a paramedic or an LVN, performing at the ALS skill level. BLS and ACLS certification.

Preferred: Bachelor’s degree. Two (2) years working as a Lead Nurse or Medic in an ICU, ER unit. Or five years working in a clinical setting utilizing ALS skills. Clinical Research knowledge.  

Other:  Possible mental demands include, but are not limited to: reading, math, intense concentration, verbal communication, participant contact, attention to detail, frequent interruptions, fluctuations in workload, performing very strict time-dependent procedures, multi-tasking, adaptability, problem-solving, and planning to avert potential problems.

Possible physical demands include, but are not limited to lifting and carrying of objects weighing 5-50 lbs., hearing, seeing, gross and fine motor use of upper extremities, kneeling, walking, standing, leaning over for extended periods, squatting, eye strain/fatigue, climbing, pushing, pulling, reaching, and exposure risk to potentially infectious blood and/or body fluids, and/or hazardous fumes or chemicals.
