Position Title: Medical Laboratory Technician 2

External Description:

SUMMARY: The Medical Laboratory Technician  independently performs a wide range of routine to complex medical laboratory tests, procedures, experiments, and analyses to provide data for clinical research studies.  Operates manual and automatic laboratory equipment to make qualitative and quantitative analyses of specimens; cleans and maintains standard laboratory equipment. Understands QC, perform job duties independently, troubleshooting instrumentation, communicates effectively with co-workers. The Medical Laboratory Technician 1 works under the direct supervision and guidance of the Senior Clinical Laboratory Manager.
 
RESPONSIBILITIES:
Tasks may include but are not limited to:

  • Always represents Worldwide Clinical Trials (Worldwide) in a professional manner (verbal, written, and in appearance) when interacting with Sponsors, volunteers, outside vendors and fellow employees.
  • Studies blood cell numbers and morphology, and urine cellular elements using microscopic techniques.
  • Conducts chemical analyses of body fluids such as blood and urine to determine presence of normal and abnormal components.
  • Validates, calculates, and tabulates results of tests performed, posts findings to log books and quality control records, and makes reports of observations.
  • Performs quality control to ensure proper functioning of instruments, reagents, and procedures.
  • Follows Worldwide’s WI for bloodborne pathogens and exposure control.
  • Performs order / entry of patient demographics in laboratory analyzer and / or LIS in preparation for testing.
  • Prepares Clinical Laboratory testing reports for sending to study folders.
  • Assists Senior Clinical Laboratory Manager in administrative functions of LIS necessary to satisfy the clinical laboratory requirements of study protocols including review of study protocols, set up of laboratory tests/panels, and preparation of the “Clinical Laboratory Manual.”
  • Responsible for requesting, scheduling, and attending any training required for this position.

  • Operates, performs required maintenance, and troubleshoots standard clinical laboratory instrumentation.

 
REQUIREMENTS:
Required: Associate degree from a community or junior college or a certificate from a hospital, a vocational or technical school, or one of the U.S. Armed Forces.
 
Preferred: Certification as an MLT by a nationally recognized agency/board.  Two or more years of experience in a  Clinical laboratory in chemistry, hematology, and urinalysis.

Other: Possible mental demands include, but are not limited to: reading, math, writing, intense concentration, verbal communication, participant contact, attention to detail, frequent interruptions, fluctuations in workload, high volume of workload and performing very strict time-dependent procedures multi-tasking, adaptability, problem solving, and planning ahead in order to avert potential problems.
Work involves moderate exposure to unusual elements, such as extreme temperatures, dirt, dust, fumes, unpleasant odors, and/or loud noises; handling of average-weight objects up to 50 pounds, hearing, seeing, gross and fine motor use of upper extremities, kneeling, walking, standing, leaning over  for extended periods of time, squatting, eye strain/fatigue, climbing, pushing, pulling, reaching, and exposure risk to potentially infectious blood and / or body fluids, and/or hazardous fumes or chemicals that require following extensive safety precautions and may include the use of protective equipment.
                           Possible physical demands include, but are not limited to:  lifting and carrying of objects weighing 5-50 lbs., hearing, seeing, gross and fine motor use of upper extremities, kneeling, walking, standing, leaning over for extended periods of time, squatting, eye strain/fatigue, climbing, pushing, pulling, reaching, and exposure risk to potentially infectious blood and/or body fluids, and/or hazardous fumes or chemicals. 
 
The Medical Laboratory Technician 1 will have tasks assigned to him/her each shift and he/she will be responsible for performing these procedures accurately and on time. It will be the Medical Laboratory Technician’s responsibility to notify the Senior Clinical Laboratory Manager if they are not able or are not trained to perform any assigned tasks, or of any other problems while on shift. Must be able to follow written and verbal communication. Must be punctual.  Must have flexible hours. The Medical Laboratory Technician 1 will have contact with internal staff and occasionally with Sponsors.  Professionalism and customer service will be of the utmost importance as a representative of Worldwide.
