Position Title: PRN Medical Laboratory Technician

External Description:

SUMMARY:  The PRN Medical Technologist under the general supervision of the Clinical Laboratory Manager independently performs a wide range of routine to complex medical laboratory tests, procedures, experiments, and analyses to provide data for clinical search studies.  Guides, trains, and may provide leadership to trainees. Operates manual and automatic laboratory   equipment to make qualitative and quantitative analyses of specimens.  Monitors inventory of material, supplies, and equipment to ensure sufficient quantities are available for the performance of duties; cleans and maintains standard laboratory equipment. The PRN Medical Technologist works under the direct supervision and guidance of the Clinical Laboratory Manager.  He/she does not supervise others.

RESPONSIBILITIES:
Tasks may include but are not limited to:

  • Always represents Worldwide Clinical Trials (WCT) in a professional manner (verbal written and in appearance) when interacting with Sponsors, subjects, outside vendors and fellow employees
  • Works as a generalist in Hematology, Chemistry, Urinalysis, Coagulation, and performs manual tests, i.e., urine sediment exam, urine drug screen kits, etc.
  • Maintains quality results by running standards and controls, verifying equipment function through routine equipment maintenance and advanced troubleshooting; calibrating equipment utilizing approved testing procedures; monitoring quality control measures and protocols.
  • Perform CAP proficiency tests in the same manner as patient samples
  • Recognizes and reacts to instrument malfunctions by troubleshooting and resolving minor problems
  • Document all corrective actions taken when test systems deviate from the laboratory’s established performance specifications
  • Utilizes laboratory information systems to report patient/subject test results
  • Prepares Clinical Laboratory test reports for study folders
  • Participate in team-oriented work projects for the development and implementation of validations, process improvements, and Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs)
  • Serves as a technical resource by participating in staff training; answering questions of other professionals; attends meetings on a regular basis
  • Assists Clinical Laboratory Manager in administrative functions of LIS necessary to satisfy the clinical laboratory requirements of study protocols including review of study protocols, set up of laboratory tests/panels, and preparation of the “Clinical Laboratory Manual”
  • Researches and investigates problems with clinical laboratory procedures and makes or recommends modifications and corrections as appropriate
  • Orients, mentors, and teaches clinical laboratory methods, procedures, and techniques to new staff as appropriate
  • Trains / assists in the training of new Clinical Laboratory staff on the analyzers used to perform testing
  • Assists in the training of new Clinical Laboratory staff on the LIS
  • Responsible for requesting, scheduling, and attending any training required for this position
  • Follows WCT DOP for bloodborne pathogens and exposure control
  • Performs other duties as assigned

REQUIREMENTS:
Must meet one of the following requirements:         

  • Have earned an associate degree in laboratory science, or medical laboratory technology from an accredited institution; have two years working experience in the clinical laboratory, and be certified as a Medical Technologist by a nationally recognized agency/board.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Medical Laboratory Science or an equivalent field, and be certified as a Medical Technologist or Clinical Laboratory Scientist by a nationally recognized agency/board. 
  • Recent experience as a generalist in a clinical laboratory in Hematology, Chemistry, Coagulation, and Urinalysis

Preferred:        

  • Two or more years of recent experience in a clinical laboratory in chemistry, hematology, and urinalysis.

 
Other:                  
The PRN Medical Technologist will have tasks assigned each shift to them, and they will be responsible for performing these procedures accurately and on time.  It will be the Medical Technologist’s responsibility to notify the Clinical Laboratory Manager if they are not able or are not trained to perform any assigned tasks, or of any other problems while on shift. Must be able to follow written and verbal communication.  Must be punctual.  Must have flexible hours.
 
The PRN Medical Technologist will have contact with internal staff and occasionally with Sponsors. Professionalism and customer service will be of the utmost importance as a representative of WCT.
 
Possible mental demands include, but are not limited to: reading, math, intense concentration, verbal communication, participant contact, attention to detail, frequent interruptions, fluctuations in workload, performing stringent time-dependent procedures, multi-tasking, adaptability, problem-solving, and planning ahead in order to avert potential problems.
 
Possible physical demands include, but are not limited to:  moderate exposure to unusual elements, such as extreme temperatures, dirt, dust, fumes, unpleasant odors, and/or loud noises; lifting and carrying of objects weighing 5-50 lbs., hearing, seeing, gross and fine motor use of upper extremities, kneeling, walking, standing, leaning over for extended periods of time, squatting, eye strain/fatigue, climbing, pushing, pulling, reaching, and exposure risk to potentially infectious blood and/or body fluids, and/or hazardous fumes or chemicals.
